| Nichayadartham: “Engagement Ceremony” Traditionally the first choice for an eligible bridegroom would be either his sister’s or maternal uncle’s daughter. The bride’s family informs the groom’s family about the gifts or ‘seer’, which they can give to their daughter for her wedding.Fixing the muhurathakal: “Erecting the marriage ‘pandaal’” On an auspicious day and time, the person who is supposed to build the ‘pandaal’ (canopy erected to conduct the wedding rites) decorates a bamboo stick with turmeric paste and red earth and ties a bunch of mango leaves at its tip. Registering the marriage:”Legal agreement between both the families” Padaipu: “Ancestor worship” Manai Poduthal:“Constructing the brick platform for the couple to sit on during ceremonies”With the help of a mason, married women help in constructing this brick platform. Wooden seats are placed on this platform and the couple is made to sit on thiduring different rituals during the wedding. Mattru Kattuthal: “Making the protective cover for the marriage platform” Kolam: “The homes are decorated with rice flour paste”All the ladies from both families decorate the homes with colourful designs made from rice flour paste. | Welcoming the groom: “The bride’s family welcomes the groom” The bride’s family brings gifts, auspicious items and a ring placed on a large platter for the groom. The procession is accompanied with the playing of the ‘nadeswaram’. The groom is then escorted to a ‘Pillaiyar’ (Ganesha temple) for a prayer before proceeding to the marriage venue. The groom’s mother also carries gift items for the bride, along with the auspicious ‘taali’. Poovai Arithal:”The groom arrives at the bride’s home” The groom is brought in a procession, accompanied with the playing of the ‘nadeswaram’, to the front of the house. The bride’s paternal aunt accompanies the bride till she walks up to the groom, and the bride’s brothers shower her with flowers. She stands on the ‘kolam’ in front of the house and her paternal grandmother or aunt performs the traditional ‘aarthi’ for her. Bhagavanam:”Tying of the ‘kappus’” The Brahmin or ‘pujari’ conducts separate ‘Vinayaka’ or Ganesha Pujas for the bride and the groom. Each of the maternal uncles puts a silver coin on a red cloth along with a piece of turmeric and ties it on the right wrists of the bride and the groom. These bracelets are called ‘kappus’. The elders of the family then bless the couple by showering flowers on them. Arimna Iduthal:”Showering of sprouted grains on the couple” The sprouted grains from the ‘arasanikkal’ are showered on the couple denoting a life full of happiness and prosperity.Poomanam Iduthal: “Blessing the couple” Family and friends bless the couple by touching them on the wrists, elbows and shoulders with flowers dipped in milk. This ritual is repeated three times.
